How To Create A Custom Image For Your Blog Without PhotoShop Skills

There is no denying the fact that use of proper Images can significantly improve visitor engagement at your blog. But the fact is, most bloggers including me do not know even the basics of PhotoShop and getting a custom image designed by professional for each blog post is not an economically viable option. So the question is, how do you create a custom picture for free?

Luckily there are many websites which let you customize your image. Some of these websites are paid, whereas others are free to use. I generally prefer using Canva as most of it features are free. You can design stunning Image within minutes without spending anything.

So let us find out how to Use Canva to design your “Perfect Custom Image For Blog”

How To Create Custom Image Using Canva

The first thing you need to is to visit Canva and create a free account. The signup process is extremely simple. You can create an account by logging in with your Gmail and Facebook account.

Step 1: Choosing The Image Size

Once you are logged in, you will be presented with various templates with predefined image size to be used at Facebook Post, Facebook Cover, Twitter Post, etc.  Clicking on the “More” button will reveal more templates.

You can also choose a custom dimension for your Blog. However, If you choose custom dimensions, you will not have access to image layout templates discussed in step 2.  For illustration purpose, I am going to use “Blog Title” template.

Step 2: Choosing The Layout

Canva provides you with free as well as premium image layout templates which you can use to quickly design your custom image for your blog. Free Templates are marked with “Free” tag and premium templates are marked with “$” tag.

Canva Layout Template

If you do not find any layout to be useful, do not worry, as you can design your Image from scratch within no time. I prefer not using the layout to make sure my image is unique. So I will be starting with a blank white background.

Step 3: Choose The Background

Whether or not you choose to use the layout template, you may want to change the background of the image to match your post. You can either select from the free and premium images provided by Canva or you can upload your own picture from any of the Free Stock Photography Websites.

Here, I am going to upload a picture which I downloaded from one of these websites.

Designing Custom Image-Change Background

As shown in the screenshot above, you can adjust the uploaded image size by dragging at the corners. If the uploaded image has a different aspect ratio, you can adjust it such that the unwanted part can protrude out. This part will be automatically cropped while downloading the final image.

Step 4: Add Text To The Image

The next step would be to add text to the Image. Here again, Canva provides you an option to choose predesigned templates for text. Each of these templates may be redesigned to change the font, its size, and color. You can also choose the “Add Heading” option to make a custom design from scratch.Designing Custom Image-Adding Text

As shown in the image above, I chose one of the free text templates. As you can see the text is not entirely readable. But you need not worry about that as our Image is not yet ready. We will improve the readability later.

Step 5: Using Elements To Improve The Visual Appearance

To further Improve the visual appearance, Canva has the option to decorate your picture with various Shapes, Frames, Icons, Illustrations, and Lines.

Designing Custom Image-Adding Elements

However, in this example, I already have a frame surrounding my text. So I am not adding any more elements in this step.

Step 6: Final Touches To The Image

Since our text is not readable, we are going to work on it. There are a couple of methods to do so.

Method 1: In this method we will be modifying the background Image to make the text appear clear on it. To do so, just click on the background Image and you will see the filter option. Clicking on it will reveal Brightness, contrast, and Advanced settings option

Designing Custom Image-Filter

Clicking on the advanced settings will show you more options. You can either select the preset settings or tweak the individual settings to make your Text readable.

Method 2:

If you find it difficult to tweak the settings to get desired results, you can add a layer between your text and the background Image. Make sure, the color of this layer is in contrast with your text color. Since my text is white, I will add a black colored layer.

To do so, under the shapes option in Elements section, select the first shape and drag the corners to cover the entire Image as shown below.

Designing Custom Image-Adding Layer

Next, click on the back button to send the “Black Rectangle Layer” between Text and Image as shown in screenshot below

Designing Custom Image-Send Back Layer

Now, as you can see, our background image is totally hidden. So to make it visible, we need to increase the transparency of “Black Rectangle Layer” to the extent that our text is readable.

After making all the changes here is our final Image, which is unique and visually appealing with readable text.

Custom Image For Blog

Given the length of the article, it may seem designing custom picture is a lengthy procedure, however, the entire procedure takes only 10-15 minutes given you know what exact layout you want to use for your picture. I generally use a single layout for most of the featured pictures at my blog. This makes things easier.

Canva is just one of the many online websites for designing custom images. Among all these websites, you can only use Canva without too many restrictions. However, if you do not mind spending $33 per year, PickMonkey is always a better option with much more features than Canva.

Do you know any other tool for creating Custom Image? If yes, then do share it with us.
